ROBLOX Egg Hunt 2013!

As Easter fast approaches, so do the rumors of eggs, bunnies and of course; the infamous Easter zombies (No, not Martin). I'm sure you are all eagerly awaiting the confirmation of these said rumors, and so it gives me great pleasure in announcing that there indeed will be an official ROBLOX Egg Hunt 2013! This was announced by various admins on twitter and on the ever useful; ROBLOX Forums.

Before we delve into the juicy bits of information and evidence, let us first reminisce about the ROBLOX Egg Hunt 2012!

ROBLOX Egg Hunt 2012

Being the third egg hunt ROBLOX has hosted, it had an awful lot to live up to - but it certainly delivered (For the most part). There were a huge quantity of eggs this year; with a total of 24 eggs available to be collected in the 2012 Egg Hunt - ROBLOX game, and a bonus egg only found in the Welcome to Stoogeville promotion level. This was the largest amount of egg trophies to feature in any of ROBLOX's egg hunts ever. Not a bad start!

2012 Egg Hunt - ROBLOXThe main difference between this Easter event and the two before it was the format the hunt took. In 2012 the eggs only 'dropped' in the two official maps created by ROBLOX, opposed to the site-wide hunts of 2008 and 2010. While some were opposed to this idea, many embraced for not following suite of its predecessors. They were overjoyed to hear the news that eggs would not drop in every game on ROBLOX, causing untold chaos to thousands of players. Now this may have been a little unfair, but there is an element of truth in their argument; the 2010 egg hunt did effectively bring the site to a halt and scheduled egg drops were significantly delayed. On the contrary, everyone loved it - it was great to pick up eggs that were rolling around in your favorite FPS or during a clan based raid.

Another differential factor is that both the egg meshes themselves, and their abilities were much more varied than previous years. There were regular eggs, Fabergé eggs, sugar eggs, vampire eggs, moustache eggs and finally vault eggs. Some eggs flew around, some impacted against the ground encased inside a red-hot meteorite, some even fiendishly destroyed other eggs preventing eager ROBLOXians from obtaining them.

Issues

However, with every great ROBLOX event there are always likely to be some issues. Indeed with the 2012 Egg Hunt, this was the case with there being one major problem; hackers. Due to the game using the ROBLOX in-game badge system to award eggs as hats to your inventory, this could be used as a tool to exploit the game. Exploiters were able to set up a script that awarded every single badge in the game to players as soon as they entered the server. This was a huge issue for the ROBLOX developers, and so they attempted to shut these rogue servers down. There have been various security upgrades to the ROBLOX engine in recent times, and so I am hoping that this problem does reoccur in the 2013 hunt.

The second issue that was easily identifiable was the lack of texture on some of the eggs. The Elevated Egg of the Eyrie for instance, is made up of one colour, with only a slight hint of a texture on the back of the hat. While the amount of eggs was great, I would have preferred to have a few less and have higher quality textures overall. This was not always the case, of course, as some eggs looked gorgeous such as the Sword Fights on the Heights Sugar Egg, boasting a crisp, detailed texture with some nice little additions to the mesh.

ROBLOX Egg Hunt 2013

At last! Let us talk about the upcoming egg hunt which will be live in less than a months time!

As many readers may already know, ROBLOX launched a egg retexturing contest last week. It was announced by Visual Artist tarabyte in this thread on the ROBLOX Contest forum last week. The contest was also announced in a blog post from the official ROBLOX Blog. There have been hundreds of entries submitted so far, and the contest still has another 12 days to go until the deadline of the 20th March. If you are interested in retexturing eggs to be used in the official ROBLOX Egg Hunt 2013, submit your creations on this poll.

This subsequently confirms that the ROBLOX staff will be hosting their fourth egg hunt this Easter!

In regards to the format the egg hunt will take, I currently do not know. I reached out for a comment from tarabyte, but she stated that they can't reveal any of their plans for the upcoming hunt. If I were a gambling man, I'd place my bets on it being in an official staff made game again. I hope I am proved wrong however, as I did enjoy the site-wide hunt a little more than the 2012 one. We shall have to wait and see!

And finally, here are some egg entries that I feel have a good chance at winning the retexturing contest:
