Winners of the 2014 RN Egg Contest!

As we step ever nearer to the completion and launch of the RN Egg Hunt 2014, the anticipation for the event grows! We will be revealing more and more about the hunt over the coming days, but what we can tell you now is who won our retexturing contest we have held over the last month! There were a number of fantastic entries this year and we believe the competition has been far tighter this year. It was a hard decision choosing the winning three entries, but we also have a number of runner-ups who may or may not feature in the hunt depending on development timings and the demands of the hunters!

Roblox News Egg Hunt 2014: Retexturing Contest!

As many of you know, we are in the process of developing our annual Easter Egg Hunt which will span a number of maps and dozens of different eggs. As with every year, we are looking to outdo ourselves both in terms of scale, but also quality of the user experiences. However, while we are toiling away scripting eggs and building universes, we have little time to create the egg designs themselves!

This is where you come in! For our hunt we require a multitude of different egg designs to spruce things up and make sure that each egg feels and looks unique when compared to the next. We are looking for user submitted retextures to add to our count - with the best ones being selected to feature in our game with full credit given! We want you to be creative with your designs and produce work that is unlike any other eggs we have seen on ROBLOX. Simplicity is often the best course of action, so don't think that your retexture has to be complicated and detailed if the design/theme doesn't really warrant it. This set may provide some inspiration: 2014 Eggs.

How to enter:

Rules:
1. Any egg hat can be retextured - this means you can use the meshes from the 2013, 2012, 2010 and 2008 egg hunts. Do be aware that the basic egg mesh is the easiest to retexture and can often lead to the best results. There are a number of basic egg meshes from numerous years, I suggest you use this one as it is the simplest to retexture, and makes it easy to spot the oval area where the texture goes. Here is quick list of more eggsravagant ones you may want to retexture:

• Cataclysmic Egg 
• Fabergé Egg 
• Studio Egg 
• iEgg
• Sugar Egg 
• Vampire Egg 
• Outrageous Egg
• Scrambled Egg 
• Egg Fuse Bomb (can be turned into a hat) 

2. Recolours are permitted, but unless you have performed something really clever, they are unlikely to be chosen to feature in our hunt

3. You can send as many entries as you want - please try to keep them within one private message (it makes the collection process a lot easier). If you have a large amount of entries, it would be advisable to send  them as a set.

The requirements to enter this retexturing contest are simple:

1. Upload your creation as a ROBLOX model with 'egg' somewhere in the title. In the description, please insert the tag 'RN Egg Hunt 2014'. Make sure the model is freely available - this is important.

2. Copy the URL (link) of the model and private message it to Arbirator. I will be creating a set in order to store all of the egg entries

The winners will be announced  on April 6th 2014, so you have just under two weeks to complete your entries and send them in. Good luck to all contestants! I hope to see some fantastic designs!

Memorial Day Survey: Retexture Race

Hi. IBarrageI here back from what seems a big break. (Exam troubles and whatnot have caused me to be inactive with RN for some time). But I am back now, ready to bring you more posts.

This post is about the Memorial Day poll going on right now. And this post is specifically about the retextures being voted in the survey to be published. (Side note: arbirator has told me to be totally unbiased when it comes to this post due to me being mentioned in this post. I might have difficulty with this :P)

First off we have the very humble "Sock" by the ever amusing Phantomazing

Phantomazing made this retexture /number/ months ago to celebrate the Olympics, but it sadly never got published. So now the time has come for a survey with a chance to get a retexture published if enough people vote for it, he took it upon himself to start advertising it with this Sock-tastic ad.

This ad has proved to be effective as it has passed 1500 takes. Not bad for such a humble retexture.

Secondly we have the clown mask by Plasticine.

Ok, I'll admit it, I'm scared of clowns, (I think that's because of the fact they seem to be always smiling) and I am also scared of this retexture. This retexture is an inventive one, using the comedy mask to then create such a creepy and awesome clown mask. This retexture is also being advertised using a block style ad with a dark theme to it.

Spooky.

Plasticine's retexture has passed 1900 takes, and is one of the retextures in with a good chance of getting high in the rankings.

Next we have the silver tea kettle by the upcoming retexturer Sporeman15.



Now, I understand how much work has been put into this retexture, as I know how the texture on that mesh is made up. As quoting from the man himself "it wasn't easy, it was a massive game of trial and error".

He has currently got 2 ads running on this retexture and boy are they eye catching.

Giving a users a question to answer in an ad is a great way to bring attention to it, meaning that now over 2100 people have taken it making it one of the 5 front runners in this retexture race.

Next we have the Rainbow Crown of Ozymandias by JewleyCat



Once again I understand the pain that must of gone into this retexture. As there are so many different parts to this texture that you wouldn't believe, even if you located them all on the mesh, you would still have a hard time retexturing it. I salute you *citation*, this is an incredible show of determination

Now we are coming up to main "power forces" in this race, and this is where I break arbirator's rule.

Here we have the Bluesteel Bathysphere. A "comical?" creation by DarkGenex.



Ok, I'll say it. Is Bluesteel rust proof? I guess I wouldn't want to be the person finding out.

DarkGenex is an old hand when it comes to these surveys, while he recently got Blizzaria: The Frozen published for the President's day sale via the survey, due to it being mass advertised. And now he is back and more crazier than ever with his masterful creation? Mass advertising once again.

He is using maximum bids of 99,999 tickets on ads, and this now has gotten him over 6800 in the time of just 4-5 days (yikes).

Brighteyes revealed a few days ago that DarkGenex's retexture and another one are roughly 20 votes apart. "What retexture?" I bet you are all asking.

Well I have left the best till last (I'm disappointed in you ~arbirator), and there is no doubt that this is the best retexture in the race (seriously you're fired ~arbirator). It is the amazing (I won't tell you again ~arbirator) Crimsonwrath, Lord of the Magma by IBarrageI.

Ok, less of the bias now and more of the explanation behind this retexture. Ok so the first time I saw the original hat, I thought to myself, "that is an interesting mesh, I bet I could make that more impressive" and then just decided to be unoriginal and turn it into Crimsonwrath but more dark and rock covered. I have tried on many occasions tried to get it published via the Black Friday/President's Day surveys but failed miserably. So this time I decided to mass advertise it to give it attention. 8 ads all running at the same time, I eventually got 5000 copies taken within a 4-5 day period and has now become slightly viral with many other retextures such as the clown mask by plasticine and the bathysphere by DarkGenex creating ads "slamming" Crimsonwrath.

Eggcentric Retextures Contest Winners!

A long time ago in a galaxy far away, I launched an egg retexture contest for the Roblox News Egg Hunt. Now some of you may be wondering why has this post taken so long; and I have a couple reasons to offer in answer to this.

1. The egg hunt was delayed a few weeks as our lead programmaer TechTeam911 was busy with a very important exam and he wanted to release the game when it had reached the highest quality. This meant the contest winners could not be announced earlier. 
2. I too have also been extremely busy recently with revision for my 9 exams this summer, so I have been unable to post regularly to RN.

However, that's enough excuses for one day: it's time to reveal the winners of the Eggcentrix Retextures! As always, the quality of the retextures were top notch and it was difficult to narrow it down to 3 winners, but a decision was finally made! The entries chosen provided a careful balance of colour, design and creativity which is paramount when retexturing. The winners are as follows:

1st Place - Demons Heart Egg by McVisibility 

Boasting a menacing colour scheme and intriguing egg design, this entry screams flare. The frosted glass style pattern on this Fabergé egg paired with the detailed shading makes for an effective aesthetic combination. The colour of the base blending well with the main design adds a nice finishing touch. 

2nd Place - Hexagon Egg by mew1226

This entry features a brilliant colour scheme coupled with a detailed, eggcentric design. Making up the overall texture of the egg, the hexagons add a huge amount to this entry. The six pointed star on the front of the design adds real dimension to the egg.

3rd Place - Weaved  Fabergé Egg by rebellion666

Featuring an excellent weaved design and great colour mapping, the Weaved Fabergé Egg boasts originality. The weaving looks incredibly realistic with a high level of detail, with the colours ading feel of directional lighting to the design. 

So, there are our winners! A massive thank you is owed to everyone for their patience in waiting for the results and to everyone who entered in their egg retextures! There were many fantastic designs with several runners up to the winners!

 The winners will be implemented into the Roblox News Egg Hunt 2013 with a unique ability created by the devious mind of TechTeam911. Each egg will come complete with a cool looking badge and prestige as these will be the rarest eggs available!

Roblox News Easter Contest: Eggcentric Retextures!

Greetings fellow egg hoarders of ROBLOXia! As you most of you are well aware, the ROBLOX team are hosting their (now) annual Easter Egg Hunt in which eggs fall from the sky in a set map and players scurry around the map to collect them to add to their inventories. In parallel to this fantastic event, Roblox News will also be running an Egg Hunt of our own! There will be a huge variety of eggs that drop in the map which will entail hours of enjoyment for fans and casual players alike.

That is where you come in! As of now, we have a selection of eggs we'd like to use in our hunt, but we would like a few more to add to our collection. The top entries in the Eggcellent Retextures contest will be be featured in the Roblox News Egg Hunt 2013 and will be scripted by our genius programmer: Zinc707! These eggs will drop in-game and will award badges to players who manage (without dying horribly) to obtain them.

The egg retextures can be of any theme or design, and you can use any egg mesh ever uploaded! Creativity is key in this contest as there are already hundreds of egg retextures previously made, and of course; dozens of official egg hats. Think outside the box with your entry, and try to produce something symbolises Easter - perhaps creating a classical, decorative egg such as the examples to the right. Eggs that represent Roblox News would also make an excellent addition to Easter Egg Hunt game - pictures of staff members or the RN logo would look great! RN St.Patrick's Day Contest: Luck O' the Textures

Alas, the time is approaching when the Irish adorn ridiculous green top hats, paint the national flag on their skin and cover themselves in clovers. Indeed, I am referring to St.Patrick's day which will soon be upon us (Sunday 17th March). It is a much celebrated holiday on ROBLOX; with large quanties of St.Patrick's themed gear and hats - many of which are retextures, being uploaded to the ROBLOX Catalog. It is a yearly tradition for user's shamrock themed retextures to be uploaded as real hats and so: what better time to hold a contest!?

Possible hats to retexture could include shades, top hats, caps, ties or even helmets! The only requirement being that the entry must be St.Patrick's day themed - whether it is covered in Shamrocks (young springs of the clover), draped in green paint and given a neat buckle, or perhaps golden embroidery showcased in an example entry above. The design could even be turned into a Leprechaun - the staple symbol of Ireland. Let your creativity run wild!

Roblox News Valentine's Contest: Rosy Retextures!

It is the time of year where couples have romantic candlelight meals and are charged extortionate prices, only to spend more money in the form of exchanging gifts as tokens of love towards one another. On ROBLOX, these presents are of course hats! Yes, I am talking about Christmas Valentine's day.

This is where your retextures come in! Ideas could include some kind of themed cap, bandana, Cupid helmet, crown or tie. They must be linked to Valentine's either by colour scheme, quantity of rose or hearts or even just all out cheesiness. The possibilities are endless!

RN Contest: Frozen Retextures Ending Soon!

The Roblox News Contest: Frozen Retextures is ending in less than 2 days. The deadline for entries is Friday 1st February 1:00 AM PST. This gives you enough time to kick start your imagination and design crazy winter themed hats. Helmets, masks, plaid/knitted caps, scarfs and snow boarding helmets are just some viable options to showcase your ability, but most importantly; your creativity!

Roblox News Contest: Spooky Retextures!

Alas, it the time of year again when ghost and ghouls run amok and the undead rise again. Halloween is one of my favourite times of the year because of the delicious snacks and treats and of course it is the only real time when you can dress up and quite possibly look like a fool.

It is also the time of year when ROBLOXians happen to produce the best retextures so Roblox News will be hosting our second annual Halloween Retexture Contest! Retextures should be spooky or evil themed and sufficient to unnerve the hardiest of souls. The design could consist of skeletons, monsters, pumpkins, mummies - the Egyptian ones, bats, zombies, vampires, werewolves or anything else the sinister side of your brain can devise.

ROlympics Re-Texture Relay Contest!

With the London 2012 Olympics opening on the 27th of July, we at Roblox News are hosting a re-texture competiton to celebrate this event. Your end goal? To create the best Olympic-themed re-texture you possibly can!

But it's not exactly that straightforward. There's a twist.

With this event, you will be working as a re-texture relay team. Here's how it works;

1. Form a team of four people! Decide your order and then decide as a team what mesh or idea to use. The mesh cannot be changed during the relay!
2. The first person in the team begins work on the re-texture, passes it on to the next person and on until the final team member. Different styles of play will work; the work could be divided, or one base design is made and each person adds to it. You can put your strongest first, your weakest, anyone! It's up to you as a team to decide!
3. Each person on the team must make their own contribution to the re-texture. They also must make a model of their stage.
4. When all models are completed, create a set of each maker's stage; (here's an example; http://www.roblox.com/My/Sets.aspx?id=731358).
5. E-mail your completed set to me, along with the names of the team members, to theeasterzombie@hotmail.co.uk (and please include ROlympics in the e-mail title!)

The closing date for entries is midday GMT, 27th July.
