A Rant on the Lack of Innovation on ROBLOX

Over the course of four years on ROBLOX, I've had the chance to work with a lot of people and a lot of groups, helping develop their products. Users like Crazyman32, YrrebRBLX, Mrsmith23, DrReli, and more: all prestigious and renowned for their contributions to the ROBLOX community.

But when you start to work at groups that are obviously ahead of their time: creating what people would dream of in the now, you start to realize that outside the walls of the gated community that original group owners build, there are other groups that try desperately to achieve the same thing.

Idea: Robolox Loans?

RayMan36 here with a rather "interest-ing" way to make it rain. I'm talking about the concept of a roblox bank.

A picture in one of my rants? Impossible!

I. Process
This is complicated. I am thinking it would only apply to roblox-created items, like hats or gears. It should be a BC-only feature (maybe even TBC or OBC), so someone couldn't make an account in a day and give someone tons of money. The amount given can be calculated by how much money the person has, and how long they have been on roblox (a BC card used on an alt just created wouldn't work). I'd say the account has to have some wealth on their head, so it can be taken away. The only hard part with this is that there requires a lot of admin work: a machine can't do all of this.

II. Loan Calculator
Now that you can have a loan, what are the asterisks going to be? First off, the rates would be extremely unreasonable. If you needed 10k, you would pay 2k robux a month, for a year. The payments would be automatic. If you weren't able to pay, you would get a warning the first payment missed. After that, concurrent bans. Second missed, 3 day. Third missed, week banned. Your account would eventually deleted

Now this seems like a terrible way to get money, why would roblox make this feature at all?
I think it's a good way to get robux out of the economy.

III. Uses
I've seen a lot of people's accounts, and they seem to say "I owe _R$ to ___. This could not only lift them out of the gutter, but slam them back into it in a year.

Whadya think? Comment!

ROBLOX Gear Suggestions!

Lots of people always post that they have ideas for new gears on ROBLOX Forums. With Newtrat talking about Bacon Daggers, I thought I should join in on the action. They never get noticed on the Forums, so I decided every few days I would make an article featuring some gears ideas people have concocted. Sometimes I will ask people to make the gear so you can see what it would look like.

Some of the gears I thought of include:

  • Rotten Egg Bomb
  • French Toast Bow + Butter Arrows
  • Throwing Eggs
  • Yogurt Pot Cannon
  • Slippy Bacon

Below are the descriptions of my suggestions. If anyone can make a model of any of them, I'd be happy to support the best looking one in an attempt to get them published.

Rotten Egg Bomb:

What would it look like?
A small bag, similar to the ROBLOX Grab Bag gear, but instead the text would read 'Rotten Eggs'. It would be a mouldy green colour.

What would it do? You would throw it on the ground like the bombs you see in Roblox Battle, up above your head and flung in the direction you are facing. It would then land and explode, causing 20 rotten eggs to fly out in all directions, hitting and sticking against anything nearby. If it hit someone else, their health would slowly decrease, -2HP every 5 seconds for 25 seconds (-10HP). That is PER piece that hits, so two pieces would cause -20HP. It takes 30 seconds to reload.

How much would it cost? 75R$ because it has the potential damage if enough pieces hit but not too expensive because it takes a long time to reload and you have to

French Toast Bow + Butter Arrows:

What would it look like?
It would be like a triangle shaped bow, except there would be no string for the arrows to be fired. Like a food version of the Trilaser Bow it would be a piece of French toast and on your back would be a bucket with melted butter.

What would it do? Each time you reloaded, you would scoop up butter from the bucket on your back, you would then place it on the French toast bow and the butter would shoot of in the direction your are facing 5 seconds after you placed the butter. It would splatter on the person's body and would take 15 health from them. After 12 scoops you would get a new bucket from nowhere and put that on your back in replacement. The reload time would be 8 seconds.

How much would it cost? 135R$ because it has a fast reload time, so a user would be shooting almost continuously and causing 15 health points of damage to their opponent with each direct hit.

Throwing Eggs:

What would it look like?
A circle version of the Ninja Star. It would be white with a yellow dot in the middle for the yolk. Basically, eggs that you throw.

What would it do? You would hold it up like you hold a Ninja Star, and you have 3 hits one after the other, so you click once and 3 eggs come flying out your hand. Then to reload you would take more eggs out of thin air and hold your arm up again, ready to throw. Each direct hit would take 8 health from you, so if all 3 eggs hit you would lose 24 health. The reload time would be 10 seconds.

How much would it cost? 45R$ because it wouldn't be very strong and the reload time would be quite slow, but it would still deal out deadly damage after a number of throws.

Yogurt Pot Cannon:

What would it look like?
a cannon similar to the Hand Cannon, except instead of firing cannon balls, it would fire pots filled with delicious Yogurt. If this was published there could be different types such as: Strawberry Yogurt and Honey Yogurt in which case the cannon itself would be different colors, but for now the cannon would be a pale cream color.

What would it would do?  A circle yogurt pot would come flying out in the direction you clicked and would land upside down on the ground. If it hit someone else it would land on their head and the yogurt would seep down their body. Every direct hit, you would lose 40 health. The reloading time would be 20 seconds.

How much would it cost? 300R$ because it would do lots of damage but would take a while to reload.

Slippy Bacon:

What would it look like?
A piece of bacon, in four strips similar to the Banana Peel, but all greasy and fatty.

What it would do? It would be thrown in the direction you are facing and anyone who walked across it would slip over causing them to lose 20 health. It would stay for only the one slip and would then disappear. The person who slipped would be stunned for 5 seconds as well as losing the 20 health. They don't lose their gears while stunned though, even if they equip them. The reloading time would be 5 seconds.

How much would it cost? 80R$ because it does a reasonable amount of damage and reloads quickly, also they get stunned so you could try and kill them.

These are all my original ideas, but in my next 'Ideas for Gears' article I hope to be writing about other people's ideas. If these ever did get published I would be extremely happy!

The iPhone 5S and ROBLOX Mobile: How 64-Bit Mobile Gaming will change EVERYTHING.

It's a computer in your pocket.
A supercharged computer in your pocket, that is.

Apple's most recent announcement of the iPhone 5S and 5C should come as no shock to technology journalists (like myself) anywhere. The era of Apple's growth and maturity as an expanding and choice-filled brand is a genius product lineup. Not only a great idea for everyone who shows interests in a particular brand, but also a great way to have a "phone made for every kind of person there is."

Images courtesy of Apple.
Apple is no exception to that, with the most recent announcement of a killer industry first, 64-bit phone, the iPhone 5S. However, the question is not how people will use it, the question is when will they change everything in mobile gaming?

I think it's important to know before we start that this is an article for people that understand the concept of mobile gaming, operation of computers and more. If you aren't very knowledgeable on any of those things, I suggest you look up some information on 64-bit, 32-bit, the iOS software (iOS 7, particularly) and the iPhone 5S. Information can be found by clicking on any of those terms listed.

64-bit allows the world to grow. There is no cap to how much you can process, there is nothing too slow about 64-bit (maybe except a rubbish computer) but Apple begs to differ with the release of their new A7 and M7 chips for the iPhone 5S. This jump to processing power has changed the entire smartphone industry in one release and ROBLOX adapting this would be relevant to making their app potentially stronger than most 32-bit computers with only two or four gigabytes of RAM. There is no dotted line there at all; and having more resources to build games on is something that app developers and curators of games, medias, and more will need out of a phone.

The iPhone 5S appears to be that call to action; with a billion transistors, two times the general-purpose registers and two times the floating point registers. It sounds quite technical but is the peak of performance improvements. As I said, the 32-bit CPUs are limited to as much as four gigabytes of RAM. While that is not bad, 64-bit CPUs are open to addressing that limit (my computer has ten gigabytes of RAM, as it is a 64-bit desktop) and this makes for two times increase in performance. This means that cameras will focus faster, apps will load faster, safari will search and look faster, and libraries of data will as well. But what this means for ROBLOX is that they can finally run ROBLOX on a desktop-like CPU. The only difference being that this is a phone.

The potential for ROBLOX having this 64-bit architecture release could mean that ROBLOX could utilize even more RAM for it's game and reach a point where mobile gaming is essentially the same as desktop gaming except on a smaller device and this could mean possibilities are endless for the gaming company looking to make their games on mobile devices and that could mean anything can happen in a world looking for entertainment, creativity, and of course: a better phone.

iOS 7 and it's potential for ROBLOX's Mobile Applications

My home screen.
So in case you haven't figured by now, I am a proud PC user, a self-proclaimed technologist and media mind. The only thing "Apple" about me is my phone, an iPhone 4S that I've had for almost a year now.

Set aside this being 9/14/13 (four days before iOS 7 really releases) when I am writing this, I've already had the demonstrative ability to test a variety of iOS7 features for a good five days now, as well as be spooked by the foolery of a "3D perception" in this particular version of iOS (where the background literally appears not to move, but the icons do.)

It started to hit me some more, that ROBLOX has some absurdly high potential to utilize iOS7 to a superb advantage of mobile game development.

Here are three ways ROBLOX can use iOS 7 to make a new era of mobile gaming.

1. Light Design
ROBLOX has a very discoloured design right now. It's app is highly blue (not to forget an annoying colour of blue) and it hasn't yet been optimized for something like iOS 7. The entire design is solid. It isn't transparent, and there is no harmony in colors. But on the home screen, you see perception; this perception is the clearest way to give a totally nice and completely elegant new design to the ROBLOX game application as well as match the wonderful aesthetic already put up by iOS7. An example of the transparency is another iOS 7 feature to the left. The new "Mission Control" has a sort of blurring beauty to it that is both great at the same time just as helpful and it fits right into the operating system.

ROBLOX has not adapted that yet; and it would be great to see that happen.

2. iOS 7 Auto-Update
This is more of a choice for users, but iOS7 has presented a new feature where apps will auto update when plugged in or connected to WiFi. It's a great feature, and if ROBLOX had it's users using this; they could get valuable updates to their users immediately when needed; instead of waiting for all users to catch up on it.

3. Multitasking

Introducing the new Multitasking on iOS 7 to an app as gamer-friendly as ROBLOX is essential. If you had the ability to be playing your ROBLOX game and lets say you got a text, or an email, you should be able to use the multitask to continue your game in the background and respond to that text or email immediately. It's a must-need.

Lets say I want to upload a screenshot I just got from my ROBLOX game; but I don't want to leave that game on mobile. I want to send it via text to a few friends and get a link for the upload to send to my friends on Steam. What i'll want to do is use the multitask feature (double click on home button) and go to the text, and send it to that person then use my favourite upload program (puu.sh) to upload it to the cloud so I can send that link to my Steam friends.

Multitasking is a must-have for this new era of iOS7 gaming and applications and if ROBLOX fails to adapt to continuation of gaming in the background, it's going to be very difficult to do things you need to do at a certain time.

While iOS 7 isn't released (at least at the time this is being written) all you fine people will acquire the update and update on the eighteenth and get to try new things for yourself. Updating now just to play ROBLOX isn't worth it, as the ROBLOX app usually crashes; but I will do another article on the "post-iOS 7 release ROBLOX application" when that time comes.

Soon, I will also be launching another article on how ROBLOX (and other mobile games) can be seriously affected by 64-bit phones (iPhone 5S) and you'll see that soon!

Thanks for reading, and as always, have a good day.

Interview with alexrocks911!

Today I bring you an interview with alexrock911; an avid forumer with 5922 posts to his name (as of writing). The theme of today's question revolves around improving the ROBLOX experience.

alexrocks911Q. When did you join ROBLOX? What were your first thoughts of the game?
A. I joined in the early 2012. My friend recommended ROBLOX to be and I decided to give it a shot! My first thoughts of this game, It was making a good impression. I felt welcome by most users. It was a fun game and still is!

Q. What was the most enticing aspect of the site when you first joined? Why?
A. Well, I think the Games and Forum were the most entricing aspect when I first joined. Games on the front page were good back then and they were very convincing to play. The Forum was a fun aspect of the site, I met new friends there, had fun with other robloxians. And hey! I bet you'll run into me if you forum in ATR!

Q. What did ROBLOX offer that other MMOs and sandboxes didn't?
A. ROBLOX offered Premium Membership that gives you cool features that you'll TOTALLY enjoy. The front page of games is something only ROBLOX has. (Well, I think, lol.) ROBLOX features exclusive benefits if you have Builder's Club.. including Daily Robux, Personal Servers, Abilities to sell items, MORE ACTIVE PLACES, Make Shirts & Pants, Advertise, and a LOT more.

Q. Do you believe seasonal/holiday ROBLOX events benefit the ROBLOX community? Why?
A. Yes, I believe seasonal/holiday ROBLOX events benefit the ROBLOX community. It helps robloxians be more "excited" about the holiday.
EXAMPLE: ROBLOX Egg Hunt 2013 - Users had to find eggs. The holiday was for Easter. I think ROBLOXians got more intrigued to participating in the ROBLOX Event AND the real life holiday. Pretty Fun!

Q. What recent new release has had the greatest positive impact on ROBLOX?
A. I think Dynamic Lighting had a MASSIVE positive impact on ROBLOX. Most of the games on ROBLOX have Dynamic Lighting, they're pretty cool too!
(Hey - If you're going to make a Dynamic Lighting place: Try it out with Personal Servers and Terrain. Mines is coming out great so far)

Q. If you were a ROBLOX client engineer for the day, what would you add to Studio 3.0 to improve user experience?
A. I would add a Mesh Importer GUI. Like you open it up, There will be 2 buttons, A "Choose Mesh File" and a "Choose Texture File". Yes, it would be a plugin users would have to download. I would also add a faster way to load Basic Objects.
EXAMPLE: You quickly type in in the command bar, "load Script" or "load BoolValue".

Q. If you were a member of ROBLOX's customer service team, how might you improve their service?
A. I would improve ROBLOX's customer service. It would be faster to get a response. There would be more actual people at info@roblox (Not the bots - As you all hate). There would be a queue list. Before sending your issue/concern, there would be a 5 star rating. (red stars). If you have 5 stars (VERY IMPORTANT), it would be moved up in the Queue. If you put a 1 star rating, you would be at the end of the queue list since it's not a HUGE concern or anything like that.

Q. What effect do you believe the recent multiple limited copy feature had on the ROBLOX economy?
A. I think it was a good idea. There are pros and cons about it.
PROS: More of the same limited, more profit, you can trade more of the same limited.
CONS: Hoarders who buy a lot of the same limited and project the limited.

[oh and Merely, if you're reading this - Stop hoarding. You're just wasting robux. ;)]

Q. If you were to add new materials to Studio 3.0, what would they be?
A. A better script design. Like, when you open a script, there will be a help button on the top left corner. When you open it, It will open up a little popup with a few basic commands like this:
"if then - These statements are to check if this is CORRECT, then [this happens]
end - Ends this/these script(s)
wait() - Waits a few seconds/minutes until something happens. You can insert a number in the parenthesis"

Q. Where do you see ROBLOX in 5 years time?
A. I see it upgrading a lot. I see better moderation, better ideas, more contests, more moderators to keep the community safe. And a lot of fun! In General - I think ROBLOX in 5 years would be great. I will definitely be there in 5 years to check it. Cya!

Interview with Sherknock!

Today I bring you an interview with Sherknock; an avid ROBLOX forumer with 15,249 posts to his name (as of writing)! A theme discussed throughout is improvements that could be made to the ROBLOX experience.

Q, When did you join ROBLOX? What were your first thoughts of the game?
SherknockA. I joined ROBLOX in 2007, on the account Flameman40. I thought ROBLOX was cool for a while then I started to make games.

Q. What was the most enticing aspect of the site when you first joined? Why?
A. Building games, because I had no idea what I was doing.

Q. What did ROBLOX offer that other MMOs and sandboxes didn't?
A. Awesome hats. And a studio to build with blocks and meshes.

Q. Do you believe all free to play MMOs/sandboxes offer as much free content as ROBLOX does? (in terms of free items, clothing, games and asset creation)
A. No, because ROBLOX is a legit building game. They tell you what you are going to get when you sign up. If you don't like what you have then get some Premium Membership.

Q. What are your views on dynamic lighting? What could it be used for in the future?
A. Dynamic Lighting is one of the best updates since user-created games. It could possibly be used for design. Such as clothing and weapons.

Q. If you were a ROBLOX client engineer for the day, what artistic tools could you add to Studio 3.0 to improve user experience?
A. Probably a mesh making studio installed into ROBLOX Studio 3.0. Or Anim8or.

Q, If you were a ROBLOX intern, what project would you work on?
A. I'd work on removing the bad games and spams. And I'd work with the community. People want real things? Hey, let's throw some call of duty into a game. Want classics? Let's re-build Crossroads.

Q. What upcoming features are you most looking forward too? Why?
A. I'm not really uo-to-date with the blog, but I can't wait for the in-game Catalog and all that.

Q. If you were to add features to Studio 3.0, what would they be?
A. Mesh creating. Tutorial on how to build and script. And 3D/2D plugins.

Q. Where do you see ROBLOX in 5 years time?
A. Being one of the top 5 biggest MMO sites in the world.

Interview with USMCKABAR!

Meet USMCKABAR; a an avid ROBLOX forumer and member of the prestigious 'Helpful ROBLOXians'! Today I bring you an interview with the theme of suggestions for the ROBLOX team, enjoy!

usmckabarQ. When did you join ROBLOX? What were your first thoughts of the game?
A. I joined ROBLOX on the 21st October 2007. When I first joined, I didn't play much, as I found it a little difficult to get my head around the actual point of ROBLOX, but I visited every so often and gradually began to learn new things. After I realized exactly what ROBLOX was about, (near enough the start of 2008) I began to play it more, wanting to become a 'famous' user.

Q. What was the most enticing aspect of the site when you first joined? Why?
A. Back then I was a lot younger, (about 10) and I really wanted to become famous on ROBLOX. I used to get inspired by many different users, and I often wondered what it would be like to be them, with loads of robux, and fans. I suppose that, that is what kept me here, at first anyway. Nowadays I simply come back to forum, and play a few games. I would like to complete at least one project and for it to be successful before I end up quitting.

Q. What did ROBLOX offer that other MMOs and sandboxes didn't?
A. The community, without a shadow of a doubt. Back 'then', the community was more like a family. We had the odd spammers, and trollers, as to all other MMO's, but ROBLOX had a stable community, with interacting staff members. The staff members are now trying to interact more, but due to the high demand of users on ROBLOX, it's a little difficult. The beauty of the community back 'then', was that it was smaller, so people could interact easier, and there would be less spammers and trollers.

Q. What did you think of the tools that you were given to 'create your own worlds'? Have they improved in recent years?
A. Defiantly. I remember the old 'build' tools that were here, they are no where near as enhanced as they are today. We had no terrain, and no stamper tool. I am one of the few users who things that the stamper tool is an effective, but simple way of building. You require now major skills to learn how to use it effectively, and I find that people can make stunning places with it.

ROBLOX Studio has also improved, with the new Studio 2013. At first, I was a little skeptical about it, but this was mainly because of the large amount of glitches that were there. As these began to be fixed, I was forever growing more fond of Studio 2013, and now, with dynamic lighting, building really can be taken to the next level.

Q. What recent new release has had the greatest positive impact on ROBLOX?
A. Easy. Dynamic lighting. One of the best things that has been released, and many people agree. Places are more lifelike now that it has been added. Who knows what the limit is with dynamic lighting?

Q. If you were a ROBLOX client engineer for the day, what would you add to Studio 3.0 to improve user experience?
A.That's a though question. If i'm honest, I have no clue. I would probably add small things like a few new materials for bricks, and things like that. I can't think of anything major that I would add.

Q. If you were a ROBLOX web developer for the day, what would you add to the website?
A. I would have to add the option to edit and delete your forum posts. It may seem simple, but how many times you have you made a still typo in a thread that you class as 'important'? I think this feature would benefit all forumers.

Q. What upcoming features are you most looking forward too? Why?
A. I'm looking forward to the "Top Grossing Sort" with games, as I think this will solve the issue with 'fake games'.

Q. If you were to add new materials to Studio 3.0, what would they be?
A. Probably a water texture. There is a water brick in stamper, but for the people who use studio, there is no official water texture/material, meaning we either have to use the "Ice" or "Slate" material for water, or even a decal. I think a water material would be a nice touch to games.

Q. Where do you see ROBLOX in 5 years time?
A. Haha, funnily enough, I thought this exact thing to myself, back in 2008. I really wondered what ROBLOX would be like in 5 years time, and I didn't expect it to be like this. I would expect ROBLOX to have a very large community, unfortunately, I think that it would be a little to large for my liking though. I would also expect something to be done about these 'fake copied games' on the front page. I do see ROBLOX going from strength to strength, so, hopefully this thought comes true.

What if ROBLOX created a weather feature?

Falling in love - A piece by Zakary
Strap yourselves in for a lengthy article!

I've been wondering, the ROBLOX team are making Dynamic Lighting, but is this all we will be getting? I think if we had a few more things to make the game more realistic I would fall in love as shown.

But what if they expanded their visions, to a weather category? What if your ROBLOXian could get a tan? Or while looking into the sky a lens-flare appeared on your screen? Or even if within your world it started raining and puddles were formed? What then? We would be talking a big advance from the current ROBLOX visuals, but could also make for some interesting gameplay dynamics. Each weather function would have a play in your rendering panel on the settings in Studio and if your computer couldn't handle them they wouldn't show. But those of us that can handle it, don't you wish to take your computer to the full extent of it's capabilities, like Portal 2 does on my computer. Imagine, realistic water that could splash! It would add a feel of greater realism to our blocky world.

Lens-Flare:
Lens flare has always been an excellent graphical effect in every game that has it, and no doubt it will be excellent if it was implemented into the ROBLOX engine. I often look at the sun in a ROBLOX place, and I think, "There's something missing.." and I think a\lens-flare would be just the ticket. Adding lens-flare would add another layer of realism and would make the game beautiful.

Rain:
This was a big part of my suggestion; rain that can actually splash and doesn't need to be scripted! How cool would that be? It would be able to form puddles and the physics would be excellent allowing us to have some days sunny and some days rainy. Most RPGs at the moment are consist of sunny weather, which confirms the suspicion that the game is just running a looped script. With different weather options it would allow a random function to randomize the weather and predict it, making RPGs, more real. It would be great...

More Sun capabilities:
This would also be realistic, the ROBLOX sun being able to give your character a tan, amazing, a game can tan pixels. This would be so realistic, and beautiful. I would be able to have the tan that I gain when I go to Spain on my ROBLOXian. However, the online dating prospects of this idea could make a grown man's skin crawl.

These are just small suggestions, however weather could consist of hailstones, snow, thunderstorms, tornadoes and more...!

Thanks for reading.
